Resume'

"Living in the woods has helped me build a connection with the landscape. While the familiar subjects are important, the mood of these landscapes touches me more deeply. It’s not just a rock, tree, or a wildflower, but how these parts are connected with the whole landscape. I try to capture the spirit, strength, beauty, and power that exist in the landscape through light and color. This process captures the mood and not just the place."

Kathleen has been involved in art making for over 50 years. She started drawing in grammer school and has continued to express herself through various forms of drawing media. Art has always been a focal point of her life, but since she has retired from teaching, pastel painting has become her passion. She began as a print maker, but found a need to explore color. She started with colored pencils and then by chance a student teacher introduced her to soft pastel. After researching pastel and taking several workshops she was hooked on this medium. The quiet atmosphere of the country with the hills, streams and trees drew her to plein air landscape painting. Living in a rural wooded area next to a county park has allowed her to paint on location with many sources of inspiration close-by. She sometimes paints in a series to explore her subject at different times of the day, year, or different view points. She is a member of several local plein air groups and paints on location several times a week.

Kathleen is a signature member of the Pastel Painters of Cape Cod and the Pastel Society of the West Coast as well as many local art organizations. She has received local and national awards including the Award of Distinction from the Midwest Pastel Society, Merit Awards from tthe Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, Scholarship Award from the Pastel Society of the West Coast, and the B&V Griffuni Purchase Award from the Pastel Society of America. With a B.S. and M.S. from State University College at Buffalo she continued her education acquiring some post graduate hours. Kathleen has attended workshops with Pastel Artists Doug Dawson, Albert Handell, Anita Louise West, Anna Contes, Ben Konis, and Elizabeth Mowry.
